Woman injured as youths fight in town centre

An 82-year-old woman was knocked to the ground and injured by fighting youths in Keighley town centre this afternoon.

The brawl erupted at about 2.40pm outside Keighley Library in North Street.

At least half a dozen young people were involved in the incident, witnessed by dozens of shocked pedestrians and motorists.

Brenda Farrar, who lives locally, said she was waiting at the pedestrian crossing outside the library when about two or three people ran into her.

“They want their heads knocked together,” she said. “I’ve bruised my elbow but apart from that I’m alright. I was just minding my own business.”

A Stockbridge man ran to her aid after she was knocked down.

The man, who did not want to be named, said: “I dropped my bike and ran over to make sure she was OK.”

A spokesman for Airedale and North Bradford Police confirmed that officers had been called to the scene following reports of a fight. Any witnesses are asked to call the police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
