Keighley town mayor Councillor George Metcalf unveils the entrance stone to the new community garden
The mayor of Keighley has officially opened a new community garden, which was developed by volunteers in the grounds of Cliffe Castle.
Councillor George Metcalf unveiled a large entrance boulder, which had been donated by Gilson’s Quarry.
Jo Prowse, who began the Keighley Garden of Life Project, said: “The opening day was fantastic. It was a celebration of all the hard work done by so many in wind, rain, sunshine and mud. We had a great party and this is only the beginning for the garden, which we hope will be looked after and enjoyed by everyone in Keighley.”
At the opening on Sunday Coun Metcalf thanked all those who had been involved with the scheme, which has transformed what used to be an open stretch of grass in the Beechcliffe area of the park.
Jo added: “Everyone has thoroughly enjoyed the experience of creating a community garden. All who have taken part will form a ‘Green Team’ to continue to care for and maintain the garden.
“There are picnic tables, arbour seats, raised beds with herbs, flowers and vegetables, tree seats for the children and a performance area where concerts, drama, dance, poetry and other community events can take place. The garden is for everybody and we hope people will come, plant, grow and enjoy.”
