Dead soldier is repatriated

The soldier gunned down by a rogue Afghan policeman at a checkpoint in the Nahr-e Saraj district of Helmand province at the weekend, has been repatriated.

The body of former South Craven School pupil Gareth Thursby - who served with the 3rd Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment - was flown back to RAF Brize Norton earlier today.

A private ceremony for his family was held on the air base before the cortege left for the 20-mile journey to John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

Sergeant Thursby, who was married and had two young children, would have celebrated his 30th birthday tomorrow.
