Timothy Taylor’s famous award-winning Best Bitter has been renamed Boltmaker.

The tipple has been given the rebranding following a competition, which attracted over 450 entries.

The winning entry was from Phil Booth, landlord of the Boltmakers Arms in East Parade, Keighley. He has received £1,000 – which he is donating to Manorlands – and 36 gallons of the newly-named beer.

“This is just fantastic – when I entered I never expected to win,” said Phil. “What could be better for business than having a beer called Boltmaker on my bar! It will help to spread the name far and wide.”

Timothy Taylor sales director Grant Simpson said: “Exactly 60 years ago we ran a similar competition to name a beer – it became Landlord and has grown into an iconic brand.

“Voting on the new name for Best Bitter was unanimous so we’re confident Boltmaker will go on to become equally well recognised on bars throughout the country.

“Many congratulations to Phil and what a fantastically generous offer to donate the money to such a worthy cause.

“The name Boltmaker has a genuine local resonance as not only does it acknowledge Keighley’s engineering history, it is also a true, traditionally-brewed Yorkshire bitter. It is a fitting name for a great Timothy Taylor beer.”

He stressed that only the name of the beer had changed.

Within hours of the new brand being announced, Boltmaker had collected its first award – being proclaimed champion beer in the bitter category by the Yorkshire and North East Campaign for Real Ale tasting panel.
