Phone photos of Olympic Torch relay through Keighley are wanted by archive
12:00pm Tuesday 16th October 2012 in News
Keighley people who captured images on their mobile phones of the Olympic Torch as it made its way through the town this summer could contribute to a new archive.
West Yorkshire Archive Service is collating photos depicting the torch’s progress through the county.
Nearly 100 images have already been received, via twitter and the NowThen website.
Thousands of people turned out to see the torch carried through Keighley on June 24.
Graham Hebblethwaite - chief officer of West Yorkshire Joint Services, which oversees the work of the archive service - said: “The images in our Big Olympic Torch Archive are a permanent record of the feel-good spirit which passed through West Yorkshire in June. All the images demonstrate a really personal story and I’d urge you to upload yours for posterity.”
Councillor Val Slater, chairman of the Archive, Archaeology and Trading Standards Committee, said: “It’s great that West Yorkshire Archive Service is working to record such an amazing event. There was such a wonderful feeling of community and I applaud the service for its ingenuity. I hope that many more images are uploaded via NowThen so that future generations can share our once-in-a-lifetime experiences.”
Photos can be uploaded at nowthen.org.uk or sent via Twitter to @wyorksarchives.
