CAVENDISH Street in Keighley is suffering from neglect, according to one of the traders based on this road.

Tony Palermo, who owns the Hair Company salon, said a large hole in the pavement outside a nearby empty shop, along with wear and tear to the distinctive glass and metal canopy overhead were making the street look shabby and run down.

He said the hole in the pavement was outside the unit which used to be occupied by Chicken Cottage takeaway.

"It's been like that for four months," he added. "I've complained twice to the council and nothing has been done.

"The pavement outside is clearly dangerous as the bollards are not protecting the hole. Instead they are just all over the pavement.

"The canopy is clearly meant to add to the street's Edwardian appeal, but unfortunately no one is replacing the glass panes that have been broken.

"One of these broken panes is outside what used to be Chicken Cottage. Customers are complaining because they are getting wet.

"The canopy is also beginning to rust and the gutters are not being maintained. It has been looking run down for the last few years, and it would help if we knew who is responsible for it."

A Bradford Council spokesman responded: "We will be contacting Mr Palermo to discuss the glass canopy. The council is not responsible for its condition but we continue to try and establish its ownership.

"We have tracked down ownership of the unit at 6-8 Cavendish Street which was formerly the Chicken Cottage so they can deal with the hole which leads down to their basement. In the meantime Highways officers are returning to the site to ensure the bollards are put back up."
