MOVES to stub out current cigarette packaging have been welcomed by Keighley MP Kris Hopkins.

He said making standardised cig packets compulsory was "the responsible and right thing to do".

The Government has pledged to introduce legislation before the general election.

"I am very pleased this commitment has been made and that the law will be changed – clearing the way for plain paper packaging to be the norm from next year," said ex-smoker Mr Hopkins.

"It is estimated that 200,000 children in this country, aged 11-15, start smoking every year and it is essential that we do all we can to reduce this figure.

"There is nothing glamorous or exciting about smoking and the packaging cigarettes are sold in should reflect this reality."
