DOZENS of Marks & Spencer staff teamed up to help improve a stretch of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Keighley.

The 30 employees got together to support national canal charity, the Canal & River Trust.

The event, which also included a similar clean up in Kirkstall, was part of M&S’s fourth annual Big Beach Clean-up which sees members of staff and customers come together to help protect wildlife and the environment.

The local M&S team, who were backed by the Marine Conservation Society, cleared away everything from food wrappers to cans and plastic bags which had been dumped along the banks of the canal.

Alice Kay from the Canal & River Trust, said: “Today’s event has really helped to give the canal a spring clean, and the team from M&S worked really hard. They cleared lots of rubbish and I’d really like to thank them for their help to make the canal an amazing place to visit.”

The fourth annual Big Beach Clean-up included events at 145 beaches and canals up and down the country between May 7 and 13.

More than 8,000 people were expected to take part.
