SOUTH Craven businesses are being urged to ensure their staff are fully aware of fire safety procedures.

The plea has been issued by North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service to mark UK Business Safety Week, which starts on Monday (Sept 7).

The campaign is timed to coincide with the start by many firms of recruitment of seasonal staff for the run-up to Christmas.

A brigade spokesman said: "These new recruits may not have the same level of fire safety awareness as permanent members of staff and might not be aware of the steps needed to protect themselves, their customers and colleagues.

"This is also a good opportunity to remind existing staff of the importance of fire safety."

Advice to businesses includes store stock safely, ensure doors are kept closed to stop the spread of any fire and ensure everyone knows the procedure if an alarm sounds.
