BUSINESS enterprises in the Worth Valley could share in a £1.2 million funding pot set-up to support South Pennines projects.

Over £180,000 has already been given away – and nine new jobs created – as part of the South Pennines Leader programme.

And the cash awards have sparked further investment totalling more than £280,000.

The initiative is being managed by rural regeneration company Pennine Prospects, which is inviting applications from schemes across its region – which takes in areas around Haworth and Oxenhope.

"The new Leader programme is designed to support projects that create jobs and promote economic growth," said co-ordinator Candy Squire-Watt.

"We are keen to hear from farmers and business owners who may have an idea for diversification or expansion.

"This is capital funding for the purchase of specialist equipment or for buildings. And unlike some other regions with Leader funds, we haven't put a cap on individual applications.

"There are so many different businesses that could benefit from this.

"For example we'd like to hear from people if they have a farm or forestry business delivering visitor services, developing new local products or contributing to the landscape.

"Maybe you run a business that provides distinctive visitor services, such as accommodation or local food and drink? If so, you may be eligible for funding.

"Manufacturers creating or processing distinctive locally-derived products could be eligible to apply, or recreational businesses structured around the local landscape, or perhaps social enterprises delivering community services.

"If you have an idea, please call and we can discuss it. We can offer advice and guidance and check for eligibility."

The programme, which runs until 2019, provides grants covering 40 per cent of total project costs.

It is financed through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, but will be unaffected by the UK's exit from the EU.

Among businesses which have already benefited from the scheme is a dairy farm run by brothers Frank and John Hitchen.

Its funding will enable the dairy to be modernised, increasing production and offering a wider range of products.
