The chairman of governors at a Keighley school has been honoured for her contribution to education.

Nadira Mirza, who chairs the board of governors at University Academy Keighley, won the coveted Services to Education category at the second annual British Muslim Awards.

Responding to her success, Nadira, who is also Bradford University’s director of student success, said: “I feel honoured and excited to have won, and that my work with local and international school communities and at the University of Bradford has received public recognition.

“I am proud this award has come to Bradford – it adds to the recognition of the great things we are doing in the district.”

UAK principal Linda Wallsgrove said: “We very much hope Nadira’s award will inspire our students so they too gain special recognition for their achievements.”

The British Muslim Awards event was staged by the Islamic Bank of Britain at the Salford City Stadium.

Accolades are designed to celebrate those British Muslims who have made a significant contribution to the UK, and cover various aspects of society, including business, charity, sport, arts and culture. There were awards in more than 20 categories.

Nadira was up against four other finalists – from as far afield as London and Liverpool – in her section, which recognises the achievements of those who dedicate their lives to children and young people, and showcases valuable work and innovation across British classrooms.

The awards were presented by Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh during a ceremony attended by more than 400 people.

The evening included a drinks reception, dinner, entertainment, speeches by dignitaries and then the award presentation itself.

Money was also raised on the night for the Well Foundation, a charity that funds water well projects and health and sanitation programmes in poverty-stricken regions of the world.
