A Fairtrade project has given pupils at Oakworth Primary School food for thought.

The theme was adopted for the half-term by year three, and youngsters took part in a range of activities.

Mike Armstrong – ‘Baker Mike’ from Sainsbury’s in Keighley – visited and demonstrated baking using Fairtrade and healthy ingredients.

The children have also learned about where in the world Fairtrade products come from, and how prices compare with non-Fairtrade items.

And, as part of a home project, they created food-related games.

The initiative culminated with an event in school last Wednesday, when parents were invited to a coffee afternoon. Pupils displayed some of their work on the topic and played the games they had made, and cakes they’d baked were served up. Tea and coffee was donated by Sainsbury’s.

“The children have really enjoyed the project,” said assistant headteacher Kath Kenniford.

“It has given them a good awareness of Fairtrade and how it helps people in other parts of the world.”
