THE DEPUTY town mayor was treated to afternoon tea by a host of Keighley schoolchildren.

Pupils from four primary schools competed to make the best afternoon tea, including sandwiches and scones.

Taking part in the end-of-term inter-schools bake-off were year six pupils from Haworth, Nessfield, Oakworth and St Joseph’s primary schools.

They first watched Baker Mike, Sainsbury’s master baker Mike Armstrong, demonstrate how to prepare both basic and flavoured scones.

The youngsters then made plain, fruit, cheese and cherry scones in readiness for the arrival of the deputy town mayor, Coun Javaid Akhtar, along with Coun Shabir Ahmed and Sainsbury’s charity coordinator Duncan Turner.

Baker Mike Judge the ability, hygiene, quality, presentation and taste of the finished product.

He stated that the quality of the scones of all the pupils were to a very high standard.

The eventual winners were Nessfield School, who were awarded a certificate for their achievements.

The pupils who took part were Leah Sugden, Minnie Waddington and Anna Dale from Haworth; Regan Middleton, Emily Delaney and Milly Butterfield from Nessfield; Megan Rule, Emily Hudson and Eloise Evans from Oakworth; and Summer McGlynn-Miller, Savannah Hale and Matthew Jones from St Joseph’s.
