THE leader of a new community brass band being set with £50,000 in lottery cash has met pupils of a Sutton-in-Craven school.

Ola Ness introduced himself to students of Sutton Community Primary School, which last year won £50,000 from the People's Millions lottery fund to re-establish a community brass band in the village.

Since the announcement last November, the band has been led by established staff whilst the search for a dedicated band leader was carried out.

An active musician and tuba player, Mr Ness has performed in orchestras across the north and has conducted two concerts for Settle Orchestra in the past year.

He met Sutton's students as the term began this month and played some brass music for them.

With the arrival of new instruments, the band is now ready to welcome new players of all ages and experience. Instruments will be loaned free to band members.

Rehearsals will take at the school on Wednesdays from 7pm to 9pm and an open session, led by Mr Ness, was due to place at the school yesterday. (Sept 10)
