HUNDREDS of Keighley school children learned how to steer clear of danger at a three-day initiative hosted by Keighley Campus Leeds City College.

Nearly 350 year five and six pupils from nine Keighley primary schools took part in the Stay Safe project, which forms part of Keighley Work Safe.

Different organisations staged attention-grabbing, interactive sessions for the youngsters, including the Dogs Trust, St John Ambulance, Northern Power Grid, Northern Gas Networks, British Transport Police, West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service and School Nurse Team Bradford District Care Trust.

Dave Towers, from the Keighley Work Safe Project, said: “It's really important to engage with primary school kids, to get them to stay safe and make them aware that there is a whole world outside of their school environment.

"Working with so many different agencies means there are always hiccups with the project, but there are now a lot less as we've greatly refined things while being based at this venue."

He explained that groups such as the Dogs Trust were participating to help cut down on the number of children in the district who are bitten by dogs, while Northern Power Grid aimed to reduce the numbers of youngsters suffering burns in the home.

Tim Jickells, 14-16 partnership manager from Keighley Campus, said: “It's quite a large commitment for the college in terms of making space available over the three days, but we're really happy to host this project and we hope to continue next year as well."
