HOLY family pupils have been learning how to capture images of the Earth from 30 kilometres up.

They have explored the technique of using high altitude balloons capable of carrying small cameras.

As part of their Science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) education the students took part in a camera balloon project led by teacher Jonathan Smith.

Mr Smith said: "I committed to providing the technical kit and left it to each group of students to decide how they wanted to use it. They mostly opted for video cameras and altimeters - along with GPS trackers so that we can recover the balloons once they have landed.

“The images should be gathered from about 30km high, near the edge of space, so they will give a clear idea of the curvature of the Earth."
