CHILDREN at Cullingworth Primary School studied the First World War as part of commemorations marking the 100th anniversary of the start of the conflict.

Pupils spent seven days learning about the Great War, and the project culminated with an exhibition of their work.

There were visits from several experts in different fields, including a dance teacher, theatre company and member of the Great War Society, who brought along various artefacts and items of equipment.

The children produced artwork, wrote postcards and letters 'from the front' and made poppies.

And they took part in their own remembrance service, including a two-minute silence.

All the school's 225 pupils, from reception to year six, were involved in the project.

Headteacher Kate Sutcliffe said: "All the staff and children worked extremely hard and were inspired by the many stories of hardship, suffering and astonishing bravery by the men who gave up their lives for our country.

"A lot of research was carried out and the superb exhibition of the children's work is still there – we're inviting people from the community to come in to see it.

"I'm very proud of what they have done."
