A KEIGHLEY school is beginning to pilot a scheme designed to boost pupils' confidence and pride in their school.

University Academy Keighley is giving pupils an opportunity to be student ambassadors for a day. It is trialling the initiative amongst year eight students.

Achievement administrator Shirley Cooke said: "Students who apply are getting the chance to be an ambassador for the day.

"This is to build self-confidence and leadership skills. We'll see how the students in year eight respond before rolling it out to the rest of the school so that every pupil will have an opportunity.

She said on their appointed day each student ambassador will be responsible for meeting and greeting any visitors to UAK and will also help carry out small tasks for members of staff.

Mrs Cooke added: "This will broaden the students' understanding of the world of work, give them responsibilities, instil a degree of pride in themselves and allow them to play an active part in making their academy a better place."
