OAKBANK pupils quizzed a visiting MP who dropped into their school as part of the Speakers For Schools scheme.

Rachel Reeves, who is Labour MP for Leeds West and Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, met students at the school last Friday. (Jan 16) She explained some of her own background in economics and how she ended up entering politics.

She also spoke to the students about the upcoming General Elections, and outlined what the Labour Party plans to do if it wins.

A question and answer session saw her field questions about the cost of university fees, the increasing pension age and even about whether being a Member of Parliament was "fun".

Oakbank head teacher David Maxwell said: “We really appreciated Rachel taking time out of her busy day to come and talk to our students.

"It was a very informative session, and gave our students the chance to learn more about the workings of Parliament. It also gave them a chance to ask questions about issues that they may be concerned about.”

Mrs Reeves said: "I was delighted to spark some political debate amongst Oakbank's sixth-formers.

"They have a great future ahead of them. I encouraged them to seize their opportunities and fulfil their potential, whatever route they choose to take after school.”
