A WORTH Valley school has embraced the latest technology on offer to cut down on its use of energy.

Haworth Primary School took advantage of a Bradford Council scheme set up in 2013. This allowed schools to install solar panels without having to enter into long-term contracts with private companies, which then take most of the income leaving little cash remaining for the schools.

Haworth Primary has made use of the scheme to install solar panels, which were fitted last autumn and began operating last month. (February)

As part of a separate initiative the school is replacing its older lighting with energy efficient LED lights.

Head teacher Helen Thompson said: "The school already does a lot of education around the theme of sustainability and we're always looking to reduce our carbon footprint.

"Our year six classes have been designing sustainable eco-houses, looking at things like under floor heating, wind turbines and different types of insulation.

"We use the interactive Ecohound energy monitor system so the children can see our energy consumption for themselves.

"We also have "switch off" monitors who make sure school lights and computers are switched off at the end of the day.

"We're very excited about having the solar panels and LED lights installed. These will make a big impact on how much energy we use."
