A KEIGHLEY school made sure its introduction of a new behaviour rewards and sanctions policy was as memorable as possible for its pupils.

Children at Nessfield Primary launched 480 biodegradable balloons into the sky outside their school last Thursday afternoon (April 16) – one balloon for each child at the school.

Each pupil wrote his or her own behaviour target on their balloon. The balloons were then released, with each class letting their balloons go in successive waves.

Deputy head teacher Nicola Thornber said the new policy stressed the importance of respect for others, adding that its clear, straightforward guidance is now on display on posters all around the school.

"Members of our school council were asked for their views on the policy, so they have contributed to it which helps the children take ownership," she added.

"It is a big change for us as a school, and it is very exciting.

"The balloon release was brilliant, just perfect. Parents and the chair of governors were invited along as well, so it was a real community event."
