A WORTH Valley school privileged to see its own village on the route of last year's Tour de France is ensuring the event will leave a lasting legacy for its children.

Before the Grand Depart passed through Oxenhope last July, pupils at Oxenhope Primary School raised cash to develop a safe bike storage area so they could cycle or scoot to school.

This facility is due to be formally opened today (June 11) by the Welcome to Yorkshire boss Gary Verity.

The installation of the hoops for the storage unit was carried out earlier this month (June 1/2).

Tour-related memorabilia has been placed nearby. These include a giant letter O from the Welcome to Yorkshire sign which overlooked Oxenhope during the cycle race and art work the school created for the shop window of Aire Valley Cycles in Keighley.

Oxenhope Primary deputy head John Parkin said Mr Verity would visit the school this morning to open the cycle storage.

Mr Parkin said: "The lasting impact of the Tour through the village, coupled with this year's Tour de Yorkshire, has provided a real and lasting opportunity to make a difference to the sporting lives of children at the school.

"Numbers joining the local cycling club are up, as are the numbers of children and parents coming to school on their bikes, skateboards and scooters."
