AN overnight forest school – the first of its kind in the district – was a huge success.

Keighley-based company Get Out More hosted the adventure sleepover at Blackhills, near Wilsden.

Seventeen youngsters took part in the venture, which included campfire cooking, wood carving and games.

The initiative builds on the success of the organisation's holiday programmes.

"The young people had asked us again and again to put on an overnight camp so this was our first and it was great to be able to extend the forest school experience and have more time to engage with the woodland," said director Annie Berrington.

"They had to put up their own tents, light a fire and cook all their meals over the campfire, putting into practice some of the outdoor and bushcraft skills they had learned at forest school.

"These days many children lead very structured and supervised lives, mostly indoors. At camp they loved having the freedom to explore outdoors, let their imaginations run wild and make up their own games.

"They took to the responsibility of cooking all their meals and seemed to enjoy the food all the more because they had made it themselves."

Get Out More stages a forest school on the second Saturday of each month and is planning another camp next summer.
