HUNDREDS of children learned how to steer clear of danger at the latest annual Keighley Stay Safe event staged in the town.

The four-day venture was hosted by Keighley Campus Leeds City College and organised by Keighley Work Safe Project.

Year six youngsters from 14 Keighley district schools were among more than 500 children taking part.

They learned how to behave around hazards such as electricity, fire, traffic on roads, dogs, public transport, and reservoirs.

Dave Towers, of Keighley Work Safe, said: "We have ten partner agencies and eight were involved in this project. The children attended seven interactive scenarios during their visit.

"Year six children were invited to attend because this is the age when they become more independent and need to be more aware of potential dangers.

"All attending children were asked to complete a pre-event questionnaire and the same questionnaire was completed in school afterwards.

"This showed an increase from 51 per cent correct answers before the event to 87 per cent after.

"We believe this shows the children do learn from this. It's more than a simple day away from school."

Funding for the initiative is provided through Bradford Council's public health service.

Agencies involved included Bradford Council Road Safety Team, Bradford District Care Trust's School Nurse Team, British Transport Police, Northern Gas Networks, Northern Powergrid, The Dogs Trust, West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service and Yorkshire Water.
