CARING pupils at Haworth Primary School are helping people affected by disasters overseas.

The youngsters have raised £600 for the ShelterBox charity, which provides shelter and lifesaving supplies to displaced families.

The cash was coined-in through a disco and a year-six enterprise project, in which groups were given £5 and challenged to increase it.

Fund-boosting activities included car washes, baking and face painting.

The project began after a visit to the school, organised by Haworth & Worth Valley Rotary Club, by ShelterBox volunteer George Garland.

Pupils aimed to raise enough money for one box, which includes items such as a tent, water purification kit, blankets and tools.

Headteacher Helen Thompson said: "ShelterBox provides vital support to families around the world and the children were inspired by the talk from Mr Garland

"They were determined to raise enough to sponsor a box so that they could make a small difference for families in their greatest time of need.

"We initially started this as a joint fundraising project with Oldfield School and the aim was to sponsor one box between us, but the families in both schools have shown immense generosity and enterprise which has resulted in just over two boxes being sponsored.

"This is a fantastic achievement and the project has helped raise awareness in school of global disasters and humanitarian crises."
