AN Oakbank School student is over the moon after winning a top accolade while studying on an astronomy course at Leeds City College Keighley Campus.

Amelia Polasik, who was in year 11 at the Oakworth Road school, was awarded the college's Student of the Year accolade.

She worked towards her Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) Level 3 through the highly-acclaimed STAR Centre and Fab Lab – and gained a grade A.

"Amelia worked independently on the EPQ to gain the required skills to achieve her outstanding grade and has been an extremely thoughtful and committed member of the group," said Bernard Mosley, from the STAR Centre.

Jonathan Walsh, the Fab Lab team leader, also paid tribute to her efforts.

"Amelia first came to the Fab Lab at Easter last year and took part in a boot camp – the task was to create a product to help the elderly around the home," he said.

"She quickly became the leader in the group, creating the concept that the team went with, and continued to grow in confidence.

"Amelia was always the first to arrive and the last to leave."

Following the boot camp she worked as a volunteer at the Fab Lab, supporting community users outside school hours and during holidays.

And she has volunteered to assist at future camps.
