A KEIGHLEY project is again spearheading an event to help children learn about safety.

Nearly 1,500 year-six pupils are attending the latest Keighley Work Safe initiative.

Organisations ranging from Bradford Council and British Transport Police to Northern Powergrid and St John Ambulance are involved in the Stay Safe event, which began on Monday (Sept 28) and runs until next Thursday.

Activities are taking place at the Bradford Bulls stadium.

A similar venture at the Keighley Campus of Leeds City College in the summer was a huge success.

Dave Towers, for Keighley Work Safe, said: "The commitment of our agency partners has allowed this project to flourish when many similar schemes in other areas have ended.

"We had 450 children at the event at Keighley Campus in July and in total over 2,000 pupils from schools across Keighley and Bradford are attending Stay Safe events.

"All the children complete pre and post-event questionnaires, which allow learning outcomes to be proven. This, in addition to feedback from attending schools, has been integral in the continuation of funding for the project from Bradford Council through the public health department.

"The project also visits secondary schools and gives presentations on health and safety in the workplace."

Councillor Ralph Berry, the council's executive member for public health, said: "I am impressed at the partnership work and support from the Bradford Bulls and Keighley Campus Leeds City College for this important project, which helps children become aware of a range of risks and to help protect themselves."
