PHOENIX and Beechcliffe special schools in Keighley will receive copies of a new multi-sensory book.

The book was created for all special schools across Yorkshire by Bag Books with funding from the Yorkshire Building Society.

Bag Books were voted as a winner in a £150,000 cash giveaway set up by the Society to leave a lasting legacy in local communities as part of its 150th year.

Bag Books, one of 15 projects chosen by members of the public, used the money to produce a special book for children and adults with learning disabilities.

Copies of the book being donated to 47 special schools thanks to the Lasting Legacy Fund.

Bag Books is a UK registered charity supporting people with learning disabilities through the provision of multi-sensory books and storytelling.

The book, called A Pirate Adventure, tells the tale of a surprise pirate-themed birthday party thrown by Harry for his friend Jake. The book will support literacy development in pupils as well as building up attention span and language skills.

Stuart Cummings, director of services for Bag Books, said: “The book has been delivered to the schools and is having a real impact in the communities that we serve.”

“We are delighted to be able to support the Bag Books project and it is great seeing the benefits it is bringing to special schools in Yorkshire.

"To be chosen from over 600 charity proposals shows that this was a project that really resonated with the public and is delivering a tangible benefit to pupils.”

Pauline Giroux, corporate responsibility manager at Yorkshire Building Society, said the company was proud to commemorate its milestone anniversary by helping charities.
