IF you want to get ahead with fundraising – get a hat.

Students at South Craven School in Cross Hills had charity giving covered when they smashed a bobble-hat world record.

For the event coined-in £2,699 in aid of Manorlands, the Oxenhope Sue Ryder hospice.

Pupils, helped by youngsters from local primary schools, set a new record for the number of people gathered in one place wearing bobble hats.

They totalled 1,322, destroying the previous record of 756.

Lower-school pastoral assistant Mrs Rebecca Wilkie staged bobble-making clinics to ensure everyone was prepared for the challenge.

She said: "Our year-eight school council was really enthusiastic to raise money for Manorlands hospice.

"When somebody suggested we try to break a world record the whole school became involved.

"On the day there was a real sense of achievement and everybody thoroughly enjoyed wearing their bobble hats, knowing that the money raised would go to such a great cause."

Jodie Batters, a fundraising assistant at Manorlands, said: "This was an absolutely fantastic achievement by all pupils and staff who took part, coming together to not only create a world record – which is amazing – but to support Manorlands and allow for incredible care to be provided in the hospice and community.

"A huge thank-you goes to everyone."
