A PRIMARY school pupil has presented a road safety petition to Bradford Council.

Oliver Rhodes, 11, is calling for the speed limit outside his school to be reduced to 20mph.

The youngster is also concerned about faded road markings and blocked traffic signs close to Keelham Primary, near Denholme, where he is a road safety ambassador.

He was given five minutes to present his case in the council chamber before the matter was passed to Shipley area committee for discussion at a later date. Oliver’s petition received 348 signatures.

His campaign has received support from Shipley MP Philip Davies.

“He has done a fantastic job in drawing attention to the issues,” said Mr Davies, who visited Oliver at the school. “I saw first-hand the problems he describes – he is absolutely right.

“I hope the council takes heed of what he says and put in place the actions needed. The problems he has raised do need addressing – the issues around there are horrific.

“I think Oliver is a great advertisement for young people, to see how they can get things changed through political process.”

Oliver’s work as road safety ambassador at the school includes producing banners, boards and a newsletter for parents highlighting their responsibilities.
