POLITICS students at South Craven School were visited by local MP Julian Smith.

He spoke to the year 12 and 13 pupils about his role, both as an MP and a Government Whip Minister.

Mr Smith fielded questions on a range of issues, including the upcoming EU referendum.

Dave Phillips – head of humanities at the Cross Hills school – said it was a pleasure to welcome back Mr Smith, who visited last year for a mock election campaign.

"This latest visit gave the students an invaluable chance to find out directly from an MP how Parliament works in real terms," he added.

"There was a lively debate about the EU referendum and students were keen to hear Mr Smith's views and to express theirs."

Students taking part included Luke Whitehead, who said he enjoyed the debate and was impressed that Mr Smith was happy to discuss differing opinions with the pupils.

Fellow politics student Anna Morris questioned the MP about his views on university tuition fees.
