PRIMARY school pupils in Sutton who run a daily tuck shop for their fellow pupils were given an insight into what it takes to manage a small business.

The children from Sutton Community Primary School were taken to their village's local Costcutter store, and wrote a report on their experience.

A spokesman for the school explained: "The pupils asked lots of questions about the products the shop sells.

"They found out about the most popular products and about food waste. The children suggested that this food should have yellow stickers put on and be sold off at a reduced price.

"One of our pupils also had a go at serving her friends, using the scanner and till and giving out change."

She added that the visit was part of an initiative to encourage the school's different "pupil voice" groups to become more involved with the local community.

She said: "We aim for the highest levels of achievement and personal development for all pupils during their time here, and believe pupil leadership is fundamental to this experience.

"We have six pupil voice groups consisting of a mix of pupils from years two to six, and believe that involvement in pupil leadership prepares them for later life.

"To become a member of a pupil voice group children apply in writing, seek references and are then interviewed by their peers."
