UNIVERSITY Academy Keighley students celebrated Sports Relief Day with a host of sports-themed events and challenges.

The events raised a total of £1,372, including £503 from non-uniform donations, £110 from a bake off and £758 from sponsor forms.

An attempt was made to row a theoretical River Aire, with staff and students, each completing a section of the 71-mile journey on a rowing machine.

Pastoral managers Asam Hussain and Habib Rehman started off at ‘Malham Tarn’, source of the river, and students hopped on and off throughout the day.

Years 10 and 11 were involved in football and netball tournaments, with one contest ending in an exciting penalty shoot-out with Mohammed Ibrar scoring the winning goal.

Years seven, eight and nine students completed laps around the athletics track, and in the 30-minute challenge Eric Beaumont and Zarah Merban came top with 18 and 16 laps respectively.

The Sports Relief Bake-Off saw wonderfully delicious confections, with year seven’s Mariah Amar hot on the tail of TV Bake Off winner Nadiya Hussain.

Community Leader Nick White said: “I was really impressed by how wholeheartedly the students embraced the challenges, especially the track running. It has been a very uplifting and fun day.”
