A WORTH Valley councillor responsible for a series of huge signs to welcome the Tour de France to his ward in 2014 has again put his sign-making skills to good use.

Cllr Russell Brown teamed up with older children from Haworth Primary School to create an eye-catching sign to mark the Queen's 90th birthday.

It features the design of the union flag, as well as the Queen's crown.

Cllr Brown said: "It's about getting kids interested in design, manufacturing and engineering. I think the sign looks great. It's very colourful and patriotic."

Haworth Primary head teacher Helen Thompson explained: "The sign's numbers were made using the wood from the letters that were used on Oxenhope Moor for the Welcome to Yorkshire sign during the Tour de France. This is part of that legacy.

"This involved our year six children, who had to do lots of applied maths to create both the letters and the flag design.

"The sign was put up for the Haworth 1940s weekend, so it could have a wide audience, but this was only the first part of our build-up to a celebration event on June 10 for the Queen's official birthday.

"On this day we'll be having a picnic in the park and singing 'Happy Birthday' along with the National Anthem.

"We'll also create a union flag using buns for our tea party, and the Bradford deputy lord mayor is scheduled to visit."
