CHILDREN at Oakworth Primary School staged a Play-a-thon Day in support of hospitalised youngsters.

Pupils designed and played games and took part in a sponsored penalty shootout.

The event was organised by specialist PE teacher, Jonathan Bradley.

He said: "The children thoroughly enjoyed it and the weather was kind to us, which can make all the difference."

The activities were the culmination of fundraising throughout the academic year in support of the Airedale Hospital children's ward and neo-natal unit.

Assistant headteacher, Kath Kenniford, said: "Money is still coming in so the final total is unknown, but we have already raised almost £1,000 from a coffee and cake day and book sales held earlier.

"We would like to thank all the parents, families and friends for their support."

The school has also staged a picnic to celebrate the Queen's 90th birthday.

Pupils – who dressed in red, white and blue – were joined by children from Thornbury Primary School.

The picnic was followed by a multi-cultural week, during which each class studied a different country.

And as part of a separate topic about the seaside, a sand pit was provided in the playground and there was a Punch and Judy show and bouncy castles.

Children later went on a trip to the coast.

Activities during the packed term also included a Chinese-themed lunch. Catering staff donned costumes and pupils chose a menu of sweet and sour chicken and prawn crackers.
