A SCHEME to teach youngsters how to stay safe when cycling on the road has benefited year five pupils at Sutton Community Primary School.

The children from year five took part in the "Bikeability" initiative.

A spokesman for their school said: "Everyone involved cycled for two full days.

"Pupils had to learn how to signal safely, look behind their shoulders and do the 'life savers look'.

"One day was spent cycling in the playground, where they practised their signalling and general bike handling.

"The instructors demonstrated the basics of cycling and how to set off.

"On the second day of training, most of which was spent on the road, the pupils learned how to signal both left and right and did more work on how to handle junctions.

"They learned how to go down a minor road and how to signal on a minor road.

"The children said taking part in Bikeablity made them feel more confident about using their bikes on the open road, and they enjoyed learning how to cross junctions and signal correctly."
