SIXTH-formers from a Keighley school have completed a gruelling expedition as part of their Duke of Edinburgh's Silver Award.

The Beckfoot Oakbank group – Rezwana Miah, Charlotte Harris, Jenny Storton, Sam Mawson, Dion Alexander Connell, James Herd, Omar Khan and James Thompson – spent a weekend trekking through North Yorkshire.

They covered a route of about 40km, from Stainforth to Hebden.

With work on the award nearing completion, the teenagers are now planning activities with the aim of achieving gold later this year.

The Beckfoot Oakbank co-ordinator for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award is Melissa Fletcher, who has completed all the necessary processes for the school to be authorised as a directly licensed centre for the scheme.

Headteacher David Maxwell said: "We are extremely proud of all the students and staff involved in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award at Beckfoot Oakbank.

"They have worked extremely hard, as individuals and as a team, to achieve this awesome outcome and I know they can now go one step further and achieve the ultimate award.

"This is another example of the outstanding provision we have at post-16 level and we are proud that our students are able to enhance their academic achievements with such rewarding personal development opportunities."
