STUDENTS took part in a sponsored walk at Crossflatts to help fellow youngsters who have to spend time in hospital.

More than 250 year-seven pupils from Bingley Grammar School tackled the 5km route – and together raised £4,561 through sponsorship.

The cash will be used to help enhance new children's wards at Bradford Royal Infirmary (BRI).

It was the second sponsored walk staged by the students for the cause – the first also coined-in over £4,000.

"Once again the support of Bingley Grammar School is outstanding and the children and staff should be really proud of their efforts," said consultant paediatrician, Simon Frazer.

"The funds from this latest walk will contribute to specialist equipment for a multisensory room, enhance a multi-function room for dining and play as well as adolescent rest facilities and ensure each bed station is as homely as possible."

He and two colleagues, Shane Embleton and Ruth Tolley, accompanied the pupils on the walk.

A cheque has been handed over at a special school assembly.

And goody bags were presented to the top fundraisers, who also received an invitation to enjoy a tour of BRI and lunch at the hospital.

Adele Roberts, head of year seven at Bingley Grammar School, said: "Year seven always makes me proud but to see students engaged and enjoying our sponsored walk was an amazing experience.

"Hundreds of students took part and represented themselves, our school community and Bradford Royal Infirmary. This shows how the school contributes, cares and supports others."
