STEETON Primary School has won recognition for its Fairtrade efforts.

It has been awarded FairAchiever School status, for the second time.

The accolade is the highest in the Fairtrade Schools Award scheme.

Pupils have taken part in a range of activities over the past two years.

Stalls selling Fairtrade products are staged after school several times a year, with support from Skipton Oxfam shop.

Children across the school mark each Fairtrade Fortnight by learning about products and producers.

They have also taken part in Fairtrade French breakfasts and made bunting.

And links have been forged with Steeton Co-op.

Reception classes have visited the store, where they saw – and sampled – Fairtrade goods.

The shop's manager, Majid Mahmood, has been into school to talk to members of the school council about the Co-op's role in promoting Fairtrade items and take part in a question-and-answer session.

He also presented a number of products to be used as raffle prizes at a family quiz event organised by the school Friends.

Diana Linford, Steeton Primary's international school co-ordinator, said: "The children find learning about Fairtrade farmers and producers very interesting.

"They love running the Fairtrade stalls after school."

Head of school, Kevin Wheeler, said: "As a school we are always trying to develop links with the local community and we hope we can continue to work with Steeton Co-op in the future."
