PUPILS from four Bradford-district schools – including Keelham Primary near Denholme – are writing a song that they will perform as part of a national music event.

Roger Davies – a guitarist, vocalist and harmonica player – is hosting singing and songwriting workshops with the children ahead of BBC Music Day.

The UK-wide initiative is on June 9 and there will be an event in City Park, Bradford.

A number of pupils from Keelham Primary, plus Dixons Music Primary, Marshfield Primary School and Feversham Primary Academy, will sing four songs live together on the day.

Mr Davies, who is running three sessions at each school in preparation for the event, said one of the songs – called Bradford City Serenade – will be written with the help of the youngsters during the workshops.

“It is about the place in general,” said Mr Davies, 36. “We celebrate the area in the song and mention some local places.

“It is written from the emphasis of the children and is celebratory singing about growing up in Bradford and what it means to them.”

Mr Davies said pupils would also be performing his song Bradford Born ’N’ Raised, as well as On Ilkla Moor Baht ’At and Lou Reed’s Perfect Day.

“I was asked by Bradford Music and Arts Service to prepare the pupils for a performance in City Park for BBC Music Day," he said.

“There will be lots of schools from Bradford district taking part and several hundred kids.”
