BAD parking and dog mess are the main bugbears of parents outside the region's school gates, new research has revealed.

And more than 80 per cent of those who took part in the survey – by online parenting resource, Families – felt more should be done to tackle the problem of dangerous and disrespectful parkers.

Over one third of respondents would support a 'traffic warden' scheme, in which volunteer parents and staff could ticket bad drivers, with all proceeds being ploughed into the school.

A 'name and shame' list of offenders, posted in newsletters and on school noticeboards, was also backed.

Other parental pet hates included people who smoked outside schools.

Faye Mingo, marketing director at Families, said: "Bad parkers continue to be a problem during the school run, but what is interesting is the number of parents who want to take action to do something about it.

"Also worrying is how many parents are smoking outside schools, despite the education geared towards young people around the dangers and health issues associated with cigarettes."
