OUTDOOR maths added up for pupils from the Ingrow and Long Lee Federation.

Youngsters from years five and six used their mathematical skills to complete a series of challenges.

The children selected appropriate items to pack for an outdoor pursuits session, learned about orienteering and map reading and then completed an expedition from Long Lee to St Ives at Harden and back.

"The Maths in the Outdoors pilot project was designed to showcase that maths is all around and problem-solving and reasoning tasks are faced in daily life – not just during lessons in school," said the federation's assistant headteacher, Rebecca Holland, who organised the sessions with assistant head and forest school leader, Gilly Fraser-Rees.

"The children thoroughly enjoyed all the challenges and showed perseverance, determination and excellent teamwork throughout."
