A SUMMER school at University Academy Keighley was a sizzling success.

Year-six pupils from primary schools across the Keighley district took part in the week-long scheme.

The programme included academic lessons in science, maths and English.

But there were also more-practical activities ranging from cooking to cycling, boxing and yoga and team sports such as football, cricket and rounders.

In the science faculty, the subject was brought to life with academic study in forensics being related to a crime investigation scene.

The youngsters learned about fingerprints and how to use microscopes and Bunsen burners.

Food was provided throughout the week, but the students also had the chance to bake cookies, prepare picnics and make their own pizzas.

The project culminated with a graduation ceremony, attended by parents and family members, when pupils were presented with certificates and caps.

And there was a banquet, with catering by Northern Leaf.

Schools represented at the project included Eastwood, Keighley St Andrew's, Riddlesden St Mary's, St Anne's, Victoria, Steeton Primary, Holycroft and Merlin Top Primary Academy.

The programme was led by UAK assistant principal, Stuart Smith, who said: "It was wonderful to see how much confidence the children gained during the week and the positive relationships they formed with each other and our staff team here at UAK."

He said around 50 people had attended to watch the graduation ceremony.

"Parents are such an important part of the success of students here at UAK," he added.

"The graduation was a very fitting end to a week full of celebrations, especially after the success of our year 11s on Thursday – the academy's best results ever.

"We are really excited about what the young people we've worked with during the week will achieve over the next five years with us!"
