FOUR sixth-form students at Beckfoot Oakbank have struck gold.

James Herd, Omar Khan, Jenny Storton and James Thompson have become the Keighley school's first pupils to achieve the Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award.

The quartet began working on the programme at bronze level in year ten and progressed to silver before gaining the ultimate accolade.

Work towards the award included a gruelling four-day expedition in the Lake District.

The trek, which started at Lake Windermere and finished in Ambleside, covered about 50 miles.

Rebecca Studholme, Duke of Edinburgh's Award manager at Beckfoot Oakbank, said: "They had to battle heat, rain and thunderstorms but worked fantastically as a team to navigate their way around the Lake District.

"As well as completing the expedition, the students have also had to volunteer for a year, learn a new skill, be involved in something physical and complete a five-day residential.

"This is a great achievement."
