AN education covenant dedicated to helping young people across the district succeed will be debated at a meeting this month.

Updates will be given on how the covenant – which aims to bring schools, parents, businesses and communities together to improve children's life chances – is being implemented.

Speakers will include Lloyds Bank regional director Leigh Taylor, who will outline how businesses can better support youngsters.

The audience will also be addressed by staff and pupils from a district primary school and a magistrate, Gill Arnold.

And there will be an opportunity for people to share ideas and ask questions.

Anyone from across the district with an interest in education is welcome to attend.

The meeting – the latest in the Public Forum for Education series – takes place in the Hockney Room at Margaret McMillan Tower, Princes Way, Bradford, on Wednesday, November 29, from 4.30pm to 6.30pm. Attendance is free.

Councillor Imran Khan, Bradford Council's portfolio holder for education, employment and skills, said: "The idea behind the education covenant is to focus the efforts of everyone on how we can raise standards.

"We want to bring together the whole community to support the district's children.

"Businesses, public services, parents and communities all have a role to play."

Michael Jameson, strategic director of children's services with the council, urges people to attend the forum.

He added: "We know just how hard schools work to improve outcomes for our children and education attainment is getting better in our district.

"But we have more to do and we believe the whole community needs to be involved in young people's education. That is why the covenant is so important."
