The opening of a drop-in centre intended to reduce anti-social behaviour in Silsden has been postponed.

The Friday night club for young adults was due to open this month, but has been pushed back to May while staffing arrangements are confirmed.

Craven neighbourhood policing team is pioneering the project with integrated youth services after receiving a high number of calls from residents complaining of anti-social behaviour around the town.

Insp Sue Sanderson said most complaints were about youths “hanging around” in Hothfield Street, Barrett Street and Aire View between 6-11pm.

The young adults club, which will operate from Silsden Youth Centre, aims to give people somewhere to go on a Friday night and get them off the streets.

Insp Sanderson said: “There will be a pool table and we have secured funding from elsewhere to get a Wii game on the big television there so people can play on that.

“It is just about having a cheap, informal and secure place and safe environment for them to meet in.

“We are hoping for a May opening time. We just have protocols in terms of running the evening and organising staffing to sort out.”

The inspector managed to secure £10,000 to fund the club and Silsden Town Council contributed a further £3,695 to the scheme.

Lower and upper age limits for the club are yet to be defined but it is designed to cater for teenagers and young adults.
