Silsden Town Council is striving to ensure the streets are adorned with Christmas lights this year.

Last December residents were disappointed at the lack of festive gleam in the main Kirkgate thoroughfare, and even the Christmas tree was not lit up.

At the time, Silsden and Bradford councillor Adrian Naylor said action must be taken to ensure the situation did not happen again.

But since then Silsden Town Council has tried to contact the Christmas lights co-ordinator at Bradford Council to no avail.

Town council clerk Lesley Corcoran said councillors had now decided to send a letter to see if it got a better response.

She said: “We want to arrange a formal meeting face to face to discuss the Christmas lights situation as soon as possible.”

l Youth services co-ordinator Abina Dorgan-Smith attended a Silsden Town Council meeting to introduce a new youth worker, who will help to co-ordinate the Friday Night Project.

The project is a drop-in centre for young people in Silsden on Friday evenings, at the Elliott Street youth centre. Outreach work among youths will also take place in Silsden park.

l A new rural development worker for the area, Alison Eagle, attended the town council meeting to introduce herself. Alison works for Keighley Voluntary Services and will co-ordinate with the rural clubs and outreach groups around the town.

l The town council has asked Silsden Park Rangers to create a “wish list” of things they may need help with financing.

The request was made after the rangers appealed to the town council for sponsorship but an amount was not specified.
