A memorial garden has been unveiled in tribute to a Keighley community stalwart who died last year.

Arthur Goff, who was 66, championed the rights of housing tenants and young people across the district.

On Friday his widow, Shirley, and family members, together with friends and former colleagues, gathered for the opening of the garden close to where he lived in West Lane. The site includes bench seating, paving around a grassed area and colourful borders.

The plans were drawn up in consultation with Mr Goff’s family and residents and the scheme was supported with a donation from the Bradford District Tenants and Residents Federation. It was also backed by Incommunities.

One of Mr Goff’s five children, Gary, said: “My father worked hard for local people and would be so delighted to see this community garden for everyone to enjoy. The whole family is touched by everybody’s support.”

Geraldine Howley, Incommunities’ group chief executive, said: “Arthur was a real tenant champion who was committed to improving people’s lives and was greatly respected by all who knew him.” Mr Goff chaired such groups as the Lowlata Residents Group, in Keighley, the Aire Wharfe Alliance and Bradford District Tenants and Residents Federation.
