Riddlesden Gala has been hailed a massive success.

Chairman Geoffrey Baldwin said Saturday’s event was among the best- supported in years.

“It was a fantastic day,” he said. “The weather was good and the turnout at the field was excellent.”

The gala began with the procession, which made its way from Barley Cote Avenue along to Riddlesden St Mary’s Primary School.

The procession was led by jazz band The Peace Artistes and also included the Silsden All Stars majorettes, uniformed groups, Bramble Hedge Pre-school, the primary school, Ilkley Road Methodist Church, the Alley Cats line dancers and Rhythm King samba band.

Among the attractions in the school grounds were a bouncy castle, inflatable slide, model train rides, a roundabout, archery, sideshows, games and stalls. There were performances from The Peace Artistes, the majorettes and Rhythm King.

Inside the school, pupils entertained with cheerleading and there were spots from the Keighley Amateurs Junior Singing Club and the Alley Cats.

In the fancy dress competition the standards were praised by the judge, the Deputy Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Valerie Slater, who attended with her consort Malcolm Slater.

The William Oldfield Memorial Trophy for the best walking group in the procession went to Bramble Hedge.

First-placed individual was Olivia Myers, as Postman Pat. Second was Hannah Armitage as a princess and third was Archie Clarke, as a guardsman.

The gala raised £3,800 – £210 of which was from the street collection – for this year’s chosen charity, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

“I would like to say a huge thank-you to the people of Riddlesden for their support,” said Mr Baldwin.
