TUC national president Mohammad Taj told a meeting in Keighley how he would fight to save the NHS.

He described the health service as the "jewel in the crown" of British people's achievements.

Mr Taj was speaking at a public meeting, in Victoria Hall, organised by Keighley TUC.

"He explained how the NHS had saved his father’s life after contracting tuberculosis," said the town's TUC president, Steve Davison.

"Workers from all the different communities in Keighley listened attentively as he also described how he had arrived in this country unable to speak a word of English and how the local colleges and trade unions assisted him on his remarkable journey."

Mr Taj was joined by senior shop steward Ansaar Khaliq who spoke of the need for all workers to get organised into trade unions to improve their terms and conditions of employment and be treated with respect and dignity in the workplace.

The meeting was also addressed by John Grogan, Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Keighley, who said the NHS was in "real danger" of being privatised and that the next general election would be decisive.
